California Appellate Court Affirms 653k Exemption for One-hand Opening Knives

July 1, 2007

A California Appellate Court upheld the 653k exemption for one-handers in the state’s switchblade statute, challenged in a 2007 case. This exemption was initiated and supported by AKTI in 2000/2001 but has been periodically challenged in various court cases, all of which have upheld 653k.

Canadian Judge Rules Assisted-Opening Knives Not Weapons

June 28, 2007

An Ontario (Canada) Court of Justice ruled favorably on behalf of a retailer defendant cited for selling banned weapons when he sold assisted-opening knives from Kershaw and others.

Goldie Russell Becomes Fifth AKTI President

June 7, 2007

At the 10th annual meeting of the American Knife & Tool Institute (AKTI), Goldie Russell was elected as the fifth president of the knife industry’s advocacy group, as well as the first woman president.

Arkansas Repeals Anti-Knife Statute

February 12, 2007

A bill promoted by AKTI was signed into law Feb. 9, 2007, by Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe. The law repeals a previous statute that made it a weapons offense to carry a knife with a blade 3 inches or longer.

Pocketknives are Tools Used by Millions – Response to WSJ Article

August 1, 2006

Reply from AKTI to a July 25, 2006, article in the Wall Street Journal titled “How New, Deadly Pocketknives Became a $1 Billion Business.” The American Knife & Tool’s response focuses on the importance of pocketknives as tools used daily by millions of Americans.
