UPDATE (March 26, 2015) – The SC House unanimously passed HB 3115 to make knife law consistent in the state. Time now to contact your members of the SC Senate to ask for their YES vote.
UPDATE (March 19, 2015) – South Carolina House Committee reported favorably on HB 3115 with an amendment to include revision also the Section 23-31–520 of the 1976 Code. House members have requested that it be debated. Contact your members of the House to ask for their YES vote.
UPDATE (March 4, 2015) – The House Judiciary Subcommittee on General Laws will hold a hearing on HB 3115 tomorrow. It’s time to contact your legislators and ask for support of this bill for uniform state knife laws in South Carolina!
STATUS UPDATE (January 13, 2015) – SB 3115 introduced by Rep. Mike Pitts, and others, referred to the House Committee on Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Environmental Affairs.
The South Carolina legislature convenes on January 13, 2015 with a projected adjourn date of June 4, 2015. Bills not acted on will carry over to 2016.

Knife Preemption Bills Prefiled in South Carolina
(December 11, 2014) – Thanks Rep. Mike Pitts (R-14) for your ongoing support and prefiling SC HB 3115 to help South Carolina knife owners. HB 3115 is an identical bill to SB 36, an ongoing effort by AKTI for several years to include knives in the South Carolina law regarding preemption for firearms. Read about AKTI members meeting with Rep. Pitts in the fall of 2011 and providing assistance on this legislation’s wording.
Rep. Pitts was guest speaker in June 2012 at the American Knife & Tool Institute’s Legislative Update during the Blade Show in Atlanta. He gave a very informative talk on “How to Speak with Your State Legislators” and spent time in the AKTI booth visiting further with AKTI members.

(December 8, 2014) – South Carolina State Senator Kevin L. Bryant (R-3) has prefiled SC 2015 SB 36. This bill would add knives to the existing firearms preemption law and assure that there are no conflicts between state law and local knife laws. See About Knife Preemption for more information.
SB 36 would amend SECTION 1. Section 23‐31‐510 of the 1976 Code to include “knives” in the law that keeps any county, municipality or other political subdivision from enacting, “enforcing” or promulgating any regulation or ordinance regarding knives.
