Survey Begins for Industry Report

August 31, 2018

The American Knife & Tool Institute (AKTI) is preparing for the next publication of the “State of the Sporting Knife and Tool Industry Report.”  Manufacturers and importers will soon receive survey information for independent and confidential data collection by the accounting firm RSM .

The AKTI “State of the Sporting Knife and Tool Industry Report” provides an in-depth statistical snapshot of the industry.  Previous reports have been instrumental in the successes of the organization to clarify or remove knife laws on the state level, and moving current federal initiatives.  The last published report, based on 2014 data, showed that nationally the industry accounted for $953.7 million in gross revenues and 4704 direct employees. This resulted in an industry that generates $5.722 billion in total economic activity, taking into consideration the impact of outside suppliers to knife and tool companies.

“This document is one of the most important tools we have when talking to legislators,” said AKTI President CJ Buck.  “Legislators rely on industry experts for information in understanding an industry or product when making decisions on legislation, and this report and AKTI’s body of experts have provided the knowledge and common sense approach that has made a difference in several states to gain support for proposed knife legislation or removing restrictive laws.”  He added, “Every knife manufacturing and import/distribution company is a valued contributor to jobs, taxes and economic viability in its city, county, state and region.”

This edition will be the fourth report the organization has produced and collection of data is expected to be completed by the end of September.

“Our members understand how crucial knowing the total impact of the industry is to how effectively we can advocate on their behalf, and that their participation is important to the success of the report.” said Jan Billeb, AKTI’s Executive Director.  “AKTI represents every segment of the knife community, from individual knife owners to retailers to distributors to manufacturers and importers.  Clarifying or removing knife laws helps every single one of our members.”
