Oregon’s Leading Knife Brands Establish Center of Excellence

August 31, 2024

night photo of Portland, OregonIn a groundbreaking move, five of Portland’s leading knife manufacturers have joined forces to establish the Portland Knife Center of Excellence (PKCoE). This collaborative effort aims to solidify Portland’s reputation as a global hub for knife design, manufacturing, and innovation.

Founding members Benchmade, CRKT, Gerber Gear, Leatherman, and STEELPORT Knife Co. are proud to be at the forefront of this initiative. Together, they represent over 200 years of combined experience in the knife industry and a commitment to excellence, making Portland a renowned center for knife manufacturing.

With more than 50% of domestically sold knives manufactured in the Portland Metro area, the PKCoE seeks to further elevate the region’s status as a leader in the industry. By uniting their efforts, these companies aim to support local and global economies, create jobs, and foster a thriving community of knife enthusiasts.

Four brands at the core of the PKCoE are members of the American Knife & Tool Institute (AKTI): Benchmade, CRKT, Gerber Gear, and Leatherman.

“Given the track record of support and involvement in AKTI over the past 25 years, it comes as no surprise the brands are involved in more efforts to support the knife industry,” said Jan Billeb, Executive Director of AKTI. “We’re excited to explore ways to work with PKCoE.”

The PKCoE will serve as a platform for collaboration, education, and celebration of the knifemaking craft. It will also provide a destination for knife enthusiasts worldwide to connect, learn, and experience the best that Portland offers.

In addition to the founding members, the PKCoE is receiving support from several other organizations, including Evolve, White-Summers, Stack Metallurgical Group, SurfacePrep, Travel Portland, Travel Oregon, Prosper Portland, and Oregon State University.
