Kansas Knife Bill Amended in Senate Conference Committee and Agreed to by the House

UPDATE (April 4, 2013) – Concerns in the Senate regarding the ability of schools and other juvenile facilities to be able to regulate knife possession resulted in amending HB 2033. The definition of “municipality” can be found KSA 75-3102. The bill now would exclude from the definition of municipality the following entities: school districts, jails and juvenile correctional facilities. HB 2033 will also now eliminate “throwing stars” from the list of weapons considered criminal to carry.

2013 Kansas Knife Legislation Would be Positive for Knife Owners and Knife Manufacturing

Cody, WY (January 20, 2013) – Thanks to the Kansas House Federal and State Affairs Committee for their combined effort to introduce legislation that will benefit knife owners in the Sunflower State.

HB 2033 would enact knife preemption, prohibiting cities from regulation the transportation, possession, carrying, sale, transfer, purchase, gift, devise, licensing, registration or use of a knife or knife making components. It would also prohibit a city from enacting any ordinance that would be more restrictive of knife manufacturing than the manufacture of any other commercial good. This bill would also amend the crimes of criminal use of weapons and criminally carrying a weapon by removing restrictions on switchblades, dirks, daggers, and stilettos. See About Knife Preemption for more information and AKTI Approved Definitions for more about legal knife definitions.
