AKTI Applauds Illinois Senate Passage of Senate Bill 2294

May 2, 2016

Legislation Reduces Barriers for Law Abiding Citizens, Hunters, and Tradesmen’s Access to Auto-Open Knives

May 2, 2016 – Cody, WY – The American Knife & Tool Institute (AKTI) today applauded the Illinois Senate’s swift passage of SB 2294, a repeal on the prohibition of auto-open knives. The legislation, if enacted, will allow law-abiding citizens of Illinois to possess knives that open “automatically by hand pressure applied to a button, spring or other device in the handle of the knife.” SB 2294 passed the Illinois Senate on April 19th, and was immediately referred to the House, where it awaits a Committee assignment.

“We are extremely pleased to see SB 2294 pass the Illinois Senate,” said AKTI’s Executive Director, Jan Billeb. “We believe that SB 2294 will be beneficial to all citizens in the State of Illinois, particularly tradesmen, hunters, campers, and individuals who find these tools necessary as part of their daily routine. We commend the Senate for passing SB 2294, and call on Members of the Illinois House of Representatives to do the same.”

AKTI is a non-profit 501(c)6 organization which represents all segments of the knife industry and knife users, promoting reasonable and responsible knife legislation and consistent enforcement. We believe that law-abiding citizens should be able to carry their essential and valuable tools without the fear of arbitrary, inconsistent and ineffective governmental restrictions.

“SB 2294 not only protects law abiding citizens of Illinois, but it further clarifies confusing knife laws,” said AKTI President, CJ Buck. “AKTI’s mission is to create, support, and educate on common sense laws that allow lawful citizens to purchase and carry knives and tools that facilitate daily life. We want to ensure that the rights for individuals ranging from tradesmen to outdoorsmen are protected by good policy. SB 2294 does just that – and we commend the Illinois Senate for passing this critical legislation.”
