Additional 2015 Texas Knife Bill Introduced

All items listed as “illegal knives” would be repealed

UPDATE (May 16, 2015) – HB 3884 (see revised version) passed the Texas House yesterday. It has been assigned to the Senate Committee on Criminal Justice. Time is short with the Texas legislative session scheduled to be adjourned the first of June.  Please contact committee members and ask them to vote with a recommendation to the Senate to pass this repeal on various “illegal knives.”


UPDATE (March 23, 2015) – HB 3884 has been referred to the House Committee on Judicial Jurisprudence.


(March 13, 2015) – An additional pro-knife bill has been filed in the Texas House by Representative

Harold V. Dutton (D-142).  HB 3884 would repeal Sections 46.01(6) and 46.15(e), Penal Code and amend Section 46.02(a) to remove the phrase “illegal knife.”

Section 46.01(6) defines what is an “illegal knife:”

(6) ‘Illegal knife’ means a:

(A) knife with a blade over five and one-half inches;

(B) hand instrument designed to cut or stab another by being thrown;

(C) dagger, including but” not limited to a dirk, stiletto, and poniard;

(D) bowie knife;

(E) sword; or

(F) Spear.

Section 46.15 (e) reads:

(e) The provisions of Section 46.02 prohibiting the carrying of an illegal knife do not apply to an individual carrying a bowie knife or a sword used in a historical demonstration or in a ceremony in which the knife or sword is significant to the performance of the ceremony.


Texas State FlagThe Texas legislature convenes on January 13, 2015 with a projected adjourn date of June 1, 2015.  Bills not acted on do not carry over to the next session
