2016 Mississippi HB 1294

Bill would enact statewide knife preemption in Mississippi


Issue:
 Local knife laws
Summary:  Provides that no county, municipality or political subdivision can adopt any ordinance, rule or regulation restricting the possession, sale, purchase, transfer, licensing, manufacture, ownership or use of a knife, knife making components or knives in a manner more restrictive than provided by state law.  Would also repeal any existing local ordinances.
Status:  Passed House on March 2.  To Senate on March 3. Died in Committee March 22.

Introduced by:  Representative Herb Frierson (R-106) on February 10.
Current Bill Text: 2016 MS HB 1294 would amend Section 45-9-51, Mississippi Code of 1972.

Mississippi State FlagThe Mississippi Legislature convened on January 5, 2016 and is expected to adjourn May 8, 2016.  The Governor’s projected deadline is August  25, 2016.

Effective date of legislation: Per Section 4 would take effect July 1, 2016.
